People freaking amaze me. My little sister Kate is a nurse and does home care for this cool guy named Neil. He caught polio in Mexico when he was just 25 years old, and his upper body has been completely paralyzed ever since. He loves painting, so he taught himself to create beautiful works of art with his feet and shows his work at local galleries. HE PAINTS WITH HIS FEET! Some people have these seemingly insurmountable obstacles in life.
And that brings me to my sister, who also blows my mind. She works 12-hour shifts at the hospital administering IVs, bathing patients and giving families health updates on their loved ones. Thank God there are people out there like her to care for us when we’re sick. I am just not that strong—all it takes is five minutes in ER to put me on the verge of tears because I can’t bear to see others sick. But Katie has this bedside manner that’s part no-nonsense, part kindness and part humor. I guess she’s got a calling.
Lastly, I’d like to say that my grandmother amazes me too. I have to give her props for taking this picture! It took a couple of tries (well, maybe a dozen) because she can’t see that well anymore and was confused by the fact that she could actually view the photo before she took it (she is a digital camera virgin!). Nice work, gram!
