The Aussies have a fabulous “no worries” attitude that I’m going to adopt in my own life. We had to do the dreaded task of taking the banged up van back into Auto Barn. On the drive home to Sydney from Hunter Valley, we prepared for the worst (a $5000 repair bill), tried to brainstorm stories about how the crash happened (a kangaroo jumped off a bridge and landed on top of the vehicle!), and whittled down our belongings to cram into the taxi cab we’d inevitably be taking home.
When we arrived, the staff was quick to find humor in the situation (“Did a cute guy walk by and distract you enough so you didn’t notice that big building in front of you?!” and “Well, the duct tape sure is an artistic touch.”). To our surprise, the owner, Phil, only charged us a $400 deductible for thousands of dollars worth of damage. Even more surprising, Chris, the marketing manager pictured here, lent us a red station wagon for the rest of our trip. And, to our relief, it’s an automatic.
Let me repeat: Auto Barn actually gave us a whole new car to drive! Are they completely insane?! I think yes, and am very grateful for that fact because now we don’t have to go Greyhound up the coast. Woo hoo!
