Can you tell that I have no idea what I’m doing here? The announcers heard my American accent and recruited me from the crowd to flip coins for a game called Two Up. Australians play it once a year on Anzac Day. It basically involves waving a bill in the air, finding a partner who is betting the same amount, and gambling on whether the coins will land on heads or tails. If you guess right, you get to keep the other guy’s money.
It was all fun and games when I started with $5 and ended up with $50. That is, until, my lucky streak ended and I lost it all to a guy standing next to me. He kept getting me drinks to make up for my losses, but liquid courage is not conducive to winning. Well, at least not for me: He ended up working the room and scoring $750.
